Despite this, Mediacells is predicting an incredibly tough year for the manufacturers, as the cut throat chase for new sales becomes even hotter in emerging markets and contract lengths grow in developed markets.

Brad Rees, CEO of Mediacells said: “2009 will be a landmark year for the global mobile industry with far more people owning mobiles than do not. However, Mediacells is predicting a tough time for manufacturers and we believe that, despite this growth, most of the major manufacturers will suffer lower unit sales and falling revenues.”
“Our research also shows that the average length of contract in 2008 was 16 and a half months, up from 14.6 months in 2007. For 2009, we believe this trend will continue – which is bad news for the manufacturers in developed markets and also for consumers, who will have to wait longer to get hold of that dream phone.”
